On my way back home from school, I browse a new construction site. Big trucks are bringing relief concrete blocks covered with colorful smalti mosaics.
Later I learn that it will be a huge abstract mosaic mural right on the façade of the building, facing central street. I adore small "delicious" squares which look like colored candy, which I carved out from the blocks.
In my schoolbag I have a big flat screwdriver and a small hammer, which help me in accomplishment of my mission. It becomes my job and obsession. Element of risk is present too…. nobody should see me doing that. Also I don't know for how long those blocks will stay unattended, and when the big installation will begin.
Finally I bring heavy fifth bag full of smalti from the site. At home I use old tin boxes to separate tiles by hues. I have enough tessera to create long color gradation stripes. I decide to decorate my fish tank with them. I keep my two beautiful gold fishes in the jar while I build a colorful mosaic maze with a nice cozy cave for them. Finally my fishes are back in their home. They look a bit disoriented.
Next morning I find both of them floating bellies up in the tank.
I toss them into the garbage bag and bury them in our back yard.
I make little mosaic headstone composition with two abstract looking fishes. Next day I find out that some pieces are missing in my tombstone composition….as a matter of fact, stolen by kids from my neighborhood.
